An Advent Prayer for the Family

Heavenly Father, your son, Jesus, is your greatest gift to us, a great sign of your love. Guide us as we strive to walk in that love together as a family this Advent. As we prepare our hearts for Christmas, bring us closer to each other and to your son. Give us the grace and strength we need every day. Help us to always trust in you. Come, Lord Jesus, lead all people closer to you. Come and dispel the darkness of our world with the light of your love. Amen.

The first week of Advent focuses on hope, symbolized by the “Prophet’s Candle,” which recalls the prophets’ expectation of the Messiah and God’s promise of a Savior.

Advent emphasizes four virtues—hope, peace, joy, and love—that Christians practice daily while preparing for Jesus.

Hope is Advent's first virtue—trusting God's promises despite uncertainty. Build hope through daily prayer, seeking guidance, and reading biblical accounts of Jesus' coming.

Peace is the second virtue of Advent. As Jesus, the Prince of Peace, we can offer peace through kindness, patience, daily prayer, and forgiveness.

Joy is the third Advent virtue, grounded in knowing God's love. It comes from gratitude and sharing through kindness, generosity, and support.

Love is the central virtue of Advent, shown by God sending Jesus. We deepen love through prayer, caring for others, and expressing charity and connection—reminders of Jesus' example.

Advent is a time to prepare for Jesus by reflecting on his birth and anticipating his return, combining remembrance with expectation.

Advent invites us to convert by turning from sin, repenting, seeking mercy, and preparing for Jesus.

Preparing for Advent may involve participating in the . Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) for forgiveness and renewal, as well as daily prayer, Bible reading, or reciting the Rosary to deepen our relationship with Jesus.

Advent inspires joyful anticipation. Families can prepare for Christmas by acts of kindness, like visiting neighbours, fostering connection with God and one another.
